Milan - Duomo

We haven't picked out a lot of places to see in Milan, as the kids have been completely bombarded with historic sites over the past 3 months. We have settled on the Duomo cathedral, La Scala opera house and the San Siro AC Milan stadium. I've also wanted to go to Lake Como -so, that is on the list too. On Monday we went back in to the centre of the city, this time via a tram ride to a station called Zara and a wander around that suburb and office blocks. When we arrived at Duomo and saw that the queues to get into the cathedral were short, we decided to make that a priory for the morning. The inside was as impressive as the outside and the first attraction included in our ticket was the archaeological site. The site was directly under the cathedral and Duomo square and was an active site with 3 girls working on excavation. They were using wet brushes to slowly remove soil from around the structures. Their supervisor was walking around giving them directions. We then did the opposite extreme, heading up on to the roof for magnificent views of the roof itself (gargoyles everywhere) and to the Italian alps in the distance.

The following morning (Tuesday) we made the most of our ticket (valid for 72 hours) with a visit to the Duomo museum and a small church to the side with an impressive frieze on the back wall. The museum was small but contained some very unique objects that had been uncovered during previous excavations and salvaged from the cathedral over time. We then made the afternoon a 'boy's afternoon' heading out to the San Siro stadium - in the next blog.
