Santorini - a quiet day

With a late evening for us on Tuesday and time spent Skyping home, etc... we mostly stayed around the apartment on Wednesday. Ana explained the watering system and organised keys, etc... John went for an explore to Ammoudi Bay and picked up some groceries. We are living inside a giant volcano. Our apartment sits on the rim of one of the original eruptions (3 times the size of Krakatoa) and we can see out to a cone from a later eruption. There have also been landslides, especially after an earthquake in 1956. The earthquake destroyed most of the home in Oia - but most people had evacuated after the first shakes. The cave that we are living in was still in good condition and the facade was rebuilt. The cave is 300 years old. Our part was for wine making and the part below was a home for the donkeys who brought the grapes up for crushing. The grape vines are not trellised and instead curled around themselves - mostly as protection from the strong winds but we also suspect that they catch some dew - with only 300 mm rainfall here each year. We initially thought that the vines looked like lobster pots. When they can't circulate sap any more, they are cut off and regrown from the base. The wine, an Assyrtiko is apparently now grown in Australia.
