Dubrovnik

We arrived in Dubrovnik on Friday around lunchtime after a 2 hour ferry ride from Korcula. Dubrovnik is another big touristy city - with Croatia earning twice the proportion of its income from tourism than other European cities. The old town within the walls is very impressive but because a lot of it was rebuilt several hundred years ago, it doesn't have the same character as the towns with 12th and 13th century buildings. As we are at the end of the tourist season, the locals in the tourist area seem tired and grumpy. On the first afternoon we went down to the local 'beach'. It was just a set of rock platforms and a water polo court which seems to be where the Dubrovnik team trains. Will was disappointed not the be able to go into the court. John and I each went for separate walks around town while Sophie and Will had a relax.

We all went through the old town on Saturday morning and out the other side to Banje beach. Will went in for a swim in his sports shorts and we had a game of picigin from the side. A stony beach - which didn't impress John but the water and views were great. On the way back through town we bought some dried cherries and marzipan from a local market. John and I went for separate walks again in the afternoon. I walked down to the port area, just as much to get my steps up for the day as to have a look around.
