Last Tuesday, we caught the underground train one stop down the line and connected with the airport line. After a leisurely wait in the airport - consuming the snacks that we had with us, given the ridiculous prices, even for a bag of lollies - we caught an on time flight to Split. Our hosts had offered a transfer and given the distance between the airport and town, and uncertainty about finding the apartment, we took up their offer - which was cheaper than a taxi. We have never had much luck with prebooked transfers, except when they are through direct contact just before the trip.
Split was fabulous, with a mixture of old and new. Sophie and Will took a while to adjust to visiting a town that is more 'second' than 'first' world - and coming across people who do not understand much English. We had a quick look around on our first afternoon, mostly to get our bearings, find the supermarket and grab some photos of the old town waterfront. Our apartment was in a square just outside the old town walls. It was an easy walk to the waterfront and nearby Diocletians Palace, which was originally built in 305AD. Part of the main tower, an aquaduct and even a sphinx remain intact - which is fairly remarkable given the number of battles between Roman, Turkish, Austro-Hungarian etc... leaders in the past and Split being a major naval base in the breakdown of the former Yugoslavia. We seem to be stumbling across a lot of UNESCO sites.
