Rudesheim and cycling to Mainz

On Friday the weather cleared and we hired bikes for the trip to Mainz. The cycle path along the Rhine was described in one of the brochures as impressive and lived up to expectations. However, even though the track is superb and well used, some large sections are behind the levee bank, obscuring the view. The round trip was 60km, so we turned around when we reached the outskirts of Mainz. Sophie and Will found several parks along the way and we had baguette, cheese and salami for lunch (for the 7th day in a row) on the waterfront.

Yesterday we took the cable car up to the monument to Kaiser Wilhelm above Rudesheim, then walked about 2km to various lookouts before taking the chair lift down to Assmushausen. We then returned to Rudesheim on the ferry. The views were impressive and we even saw deer in a fauna park at the top of the hill. Later that even we listened to some of a concert in the local town square before collapsing at the apartment and watching some of the Olympics on TV. We have to cope with German commentary and I don't think the Austrian commentary next week will be much easier!
